An autumn sunset. Two men are running along an isolated road. It’s Mario and Steve, they have been training for the New York marathon for weeks. But that evening is not like the others. There’s a weird restlessness in the air. And so a normal training session slowly becomes a challenge, where there can only be a winner and a loser. During their race, the fatigue, the cold, and the lactic acid lead Mario to wonder about himself and Steve; questions that will inevitably lead him to question reality itself, to the point of becoming aware of the fact he’s a moribund, trapped in the wreckage of a crashed car, on the way of his final, real goal.

Jayaram keeps himself in his dream world that opens a shamanic path in front of him. He devises a plan to speak with his dead ancestors through the magical instruments he inherited from his grandfather. During the process, he loses his sanity by knowing the history of his ancestral life and the torture and misery they went through. He is caught up in the tangle of the intergenerational trauma of chattel slavery. Gradually, he loses his grip on the reality of his life. Jayaram drops out of school. ‘The Rhythm of Damam’ tells the struggles of Jayaram and his family to regain the balance of his life by returning to tribal rituals and Damam music, which is an integral part of his community’s cultural existence.

Rosa, a top professional woman, highly rated in the business market, leads a demanding life entirely dedicated to her work. The sudden death of her grandfather, from whom she had progressively moved away, due to her endless work, ends up causing her a sudden attack of stress, that puts her choices in doubt. Rosa decides to leave the city and set out to find the place and the memories of her childhood, lived with her grandfather. When she arrives at the isolated property, in the middle of the Trás-os-Montes landscape, she discovers that her grandfather left her a set of practically abandoned lands and an almost in ruins house of her childhood. Driven by the remorse and the need to find new goals to herself, she starts rebuilding her house and grow the fields. Rosa, however, is not alone on her quest. In addition to the people with whom she will establish new bonds, there appears a group of clay demons, modeled once by her grandfather, who seem, at times, to come to life, advising, guiding and consoling her, as grandfather himself would have done.
